Asthma Clinic - available to adults and children. Please make an appointment with a nurse.
Diabetic Clinic - a weekly review that may be in conjunction with hospital care or be entirely surgery-based. Patients can easily be transferred between the two services.
Travel Vaccinations - If you are planning a holiday abroad, please check with us at least six weeks before your departure date. More information is available on the above tab.
Counselling - this service is run by trained counsellors. If you feel that you would benefit from counselling, please make an appointment to see a doctor to discuss your problem first.
Antenatal - once you have confirmed your pregnancy please make an appointment to see a doctor. You will be referred to the hospital and antenatal care will be provided on a shared care basis between the hospital and the surgery. Midwives hold clinics on Wednesdays from 12:00 for Queen Marys patients and Darenth Valley patients.
Postnatal - examinations are carried out at the surgery.
Child Health Clinic - held on Tuesdays from 11:00 -12:30. Development checks are carried out by a doctor and health visitor. Immunisations are given by a nurse during the child heath clinic and an appointment is always necessary. Please do not bring children with infectious diseases to this clinic.
Family Planning - all forms of family planning are offered by the doctors and nurses. Both Dr Schmalhorst and Dr Furness fit IUCDs (coils) and implants. An initial consultation is needed for this service, to assess suitability. Emergency contraception is also available.
Coronary Heart Clinic - an opportunity to check blood pressure, arrange blood tests if indicated and discuss lifestyle.
Cervical Smears - the surgery has a recall system. If you are due a smear, please make an appointment with a nurse.
Mammography - a three-yearly examination of the breast for cancer and is now done routinely for women between the age of 50-70 years in this area. You will be notified by post when your appointment is due. Women over 65 years are also eligible for routine three-yearly mammography but they must self-refer. Please ask a receptionist for the relevant form.
Spirometry Clinic - this clinic helps identify and diagnose the cause of breathing problems and identify the most appropriate course of treatment. Patients will be offered an appointment, if appropriate, by a doctor or nurse.
Smoking Cessation - please make an appointment to see a nurse
Adult Immunisations - it is important to becovered for tetanus. If you have never had a tetanus injection, you will need a course of three injections. A total of five injections gives life-long immunity, unless you are travelling or have a tetanus-prone wound. Any woman planning to become pregnant should check that she is immune to German Measles by having a blood test.
Well Person Clinic - a service for both men and women who would like a general check up, cholesterol testing if necessary, blood pressure and urine check and advice on lifestyle. Advice on problems related to women’s health such as menopause, contraception and pre-conception, and for men, information about testicular examination can also be provided.
Patients Over 16 Years of Age - If you have not been seen in the previous three years, you may request a medical check-up with one of our practice nurses.
Over 75 Check - you can book an appointment to see a nurse for an annual check-up at the surgery. If you are housebound, this can be carried out in your home. Please telephone the Surgery to make an appointment.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Please note we only vaccinate Plas Meddyg registered patients that are eligible for free NHS influenza vaccinations, i.e. patients in special risk groups or those aged 65+. Appointments must be pre-booked and are with a Nurse.

If a patient is referred for treatment to a private hospital, they need to collect the referral letter from the surgery - it is not posted.
As referral letters may take up to one week to type, from the date the patient consulted with one of our doctors, patients should not arrange an appointment to see a consultant within that week as they will not have a referral letter to take with them.
The GPs and Nurses have jointly produced these guidelines to inform patients of the issues surrounding ear syringing. This will enable eligible patients to be better informed and have speedier access to this service. Consequently, you may no longer need to see your GP if you think that you have a problem related to ear wax. If you have ever had ear surgery we will be unable to syringe your ears.
Ear syringing should not be seen as a quick fix solution for the removal of wax. There are recognised complications attached to the procedure and patients are encouraged to try the warmed olive oil approach in the first instance.
There are five potential complications to the ear syringing procedure:
Instilling ear drops
Safe and effective removal of ear wax is dependent on patients adhering to the procedure for the instillation of ear drops (please refer to the attached sheet for instructions). Use warmed olive oil for 10 days prior to the appointment. In most cases this will be sufficient to remove the wax, thereby resolving the need for ear syringing.
Eligibility for ear syringing
Prior to booking an appointment with the Nurse, please complete the attached questionnaire, sign and date it, and then detach and return it to the Nurse when you come for your appointment. If your answer to any of the questions 1-4 on page 2 is yes, please make an appointment to see your GP who will, following an examination, make a medical judgement as to your suitability for referral to the Nurse.

When you attend for a test of any kind you will be told how long you should expect to wait for the results. Please bear this in mind and only call the surgery after sufficient time has elapsed.
Our reception staff are not qualified to comment on results therefore it is your responsibility to check them and make any necessary follow-up appointment with the doctor.
Please note that we do have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection. In this respect we will only give out results to the person they relate to unless that person has given prior permission for their release or if they are not capable of understanding them.
A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example, a blood test can be used to:
A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm. and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the back of the hand. The child's hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before the sample is taken.

An X-ray is a widely used diagnostic test to examine the inside of the body. X-rays are a very effective way of detecting problems with bones, such as fractures. They can also often identify problems with soft tissue, such as pneumonia or breast cancer.
If you have a X-ray, you will be asked to lie on a table or stand against a surface so that the part of your body being X-rayed is between the X-ray tube and the photographic plate.
An X-ray is usually carried out by a radiographer, a healthcare professional who specialises in using imaging technology, such as X-rays and ultrasound scanners.
